Why Do We Refer to Ourselves as a church of Christ, Practicing Undenominational Christianity?

The church meeting at 2053 High School Road in Hueytown, Alabama is an undenominational group of Christians aiming to be faithful in every way to Jesus Christ. By “undenominational” we intend to convey that we are not a denomination and therefore we have no organizational or doctrinal ties to other churches. We desire to only be governed by Christ through His revealed word.

We have chosen to refer to ourselves as a “church of Christ” because this is one way the Bible describes a local group of Christians (See Romans 16:16). The designation means we are owned by Christ. However, this does not mean we are “Church of Christ” in the sense that we follow a “Church of Christ doctrine” or are connected with “Church of Christ” denominations.

We believe the Bible to be God’s chosen method of revealing His will to mankind. We look to the Bible alone for our authority in doctrine and practice. We simply try to follow what the Bible teaches.

We desire to share the love of Christ by being a warm and friendly support group where people can learn about God. We desire to teach the truth of God’s word to every person in the Central Alabama and beyond.

We seek to address the spiritual needs of the entire family: children, teenagers, and adults. Above all, we desire to honor God and are interested in the salvation of every soul. We invite you to join us in the same pursuit of knowing and pleasing God. How can we help you?

What is a church of Christ?

The descriptive phrase “church of Christ” comes from the Bible. It is used by Paul in Romans 16:16 when he said, “The churches of Christ salute you.” But Paul was not intending to describe a denomination called the “Church of Christ.” He was simply describing local groups of Christians who were following Christ. Unfortunately there are churches today that are a part of a “Church of Christ” denomination. But there are others who are simply imperfect Christians trying to grow to be more like Jesus. This is all we are and all we claim to be. We intend to follow the Bible and nothing but the Bible. That ought to appeal to every person wanting to go to heaven.
